Former Auburn graduate assistant Joe Hortiz has been named the general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers, it was announced Tuesday. Hortiz joins the organization ahead of Jim Harbaugh’s inaugural season leading the team, after Hortiz spent 26 years with the Baltimore Ravens.
Hortiz was a graduate assistant for Terry Bowden’s Auburn teams from 1995-97 while earning his bachelor’s degree in accounting. During his time with Bowden’s program, Hortiz primarily worked with the scout team linebackers and secondary, while also spending some time with quarterbacks and receivers. Hortiz also coordinated the summer football camps for Bowden during his time on the Plains.
After graduating, he joined the Ravens organization in 1998, where he remained through 2023. Hortiz was a personnel assistant from 1998-2000 before joining the Ravens’ scouting department. He worked his way up to be the organization’s director of college scouting from 2009-18. Most recently, Hortiz was the director of player personnel for the Ravens from 2019-23.
