Zelensky will visit Washington for a high-stakes meeting with Trump on Friday.
A vital minerals agreement between Ukraine and the US was reached after the Trump administration eased its demands.
According to the Financial Times, Kyiv expects the agreement—establishing a fund for joint mineral development—to help mend its troubled relationship with Washington.
According to Reuters, Zelensky plans to visit Washington on Friday for talks with Mr. Trump following the agreement on terms.
The US abandoned Trump’s demand for $500 billion in revenue from Ukrainian resources after President Volodymyr Zelensky firmly dismissed the condition.
The deal includes a US commitment to support Ukraine’s long-term economic development. Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna told the Financial Times, “The minerals agreement is only part of the picture. We have heard multiple times from the US administration that it’s part of a bigger picture.”
While Ukrainian officials stress that the deal is still preliminary and involves no immediate funding, it does not include the US security assurances Kyiv has been eager to secure.
