In his first major public appearance since a gunman attempted to shoot him at a Saturday campaign rally, Donald Trump walked out into the convention hall to stand alongside his newly announced running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio). The selection was revealed on Trump’s Truth Social media platform at the start of the four-day Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. J.D. Vance, author of the bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” has become a strong supporter of Trump after previously criticizing him. Vance’s popularity among Trump’s base in Ohio could boost voter turnout for the November 5 election.
The former president, with a bandage on his ear, was greeted with cheers and chants of “USA.” Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said earlier in his convention speech Monday evening that “this November, we are not deciding simply the fate of the next four years, we’re setting a course for the next 40 years.”
